On February 25, 2025, the Graduate School organized a research study tour to the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Studies (IMRS) for students, research assistants, and PhD candidates.
During the visit, participants gained valuable insights into IMRS's key activities and ongoing applied research projects. Additionally, IMRS representatives introduced internship opportunities available for those interested in further engagement with the institute.
The study tour was arranged as part of the Graduate Café research seminar series. The initiative was coordinated by Associate Professor Dr. Nargiza Alimukhamedova, Course Leader of the MSc Research Methods for Social Sciences.
On January 29, 2025, Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) successfully hosted another insightful session of the Graduate Café Discussion Series.
The seminar, titled "Unlocking Opportunities: How to Apply for Master’s Programs and Win Scholarships," featured Otabek Akromov, PhD candidate in Political Science at the University of Minnesota and Head of the Department at the Center for Progressive Reforms in Tashkent. Drawing from his extensive academic and professional experience—including a joint MA in Security Studies from the University of Glasgow, Dublin City University, and Charles University—Otabek shared valuable insights on application strategies, scholarship opportunities, and key tips for prospective master’s students.
Attendees gained firsthand knowledge of scholarship application processes, university selection criteria, and ways to enhance their chances of securing funding for graduate studies. The interactive session also allowed participants to ask questions and receive expert advice.
On January 22, 2025, we hosted an engaging and insightful session as part of our Graduate Café Discussion Series. The seminar, titled "Linking Social Media and Survey Data for Research", featured Prof. Tarek Al Baghal, Professor of Survey Methodology at the Institute of Social and Economic Research, University of Essex.
Prof. Al Baghal shared his expertise on integrating social media data with survey methodologies to enhance research. Drawing on his extensive experience as Associate Director for Content Development on Understanding Society, one of the world’s largest longitudinal studies, he demonstrated how combining digital data sources with surveys can provide richer and more comprehensive insights.
On November 27, 2024, Westminster International University in Tashkent honored to host a guest lecture by Nigora Mamadaminova, a PhD Candidate at the University of Warsaw, Poland. Her presentation, titled "Women Leaders' Success in Higher Education Management: A Comparative Study between Poland and Uzbekistan," provided a fascinating cross-cultural analysis of gender dynamics in academic leadership.
Ms. Mamadaminova's research delves into the pathways, challenges, and strategies for success employed by women who have ascended to management roles within the higher education systems of both nations. The comparative framework offered unique insights into how different cultural, social, and institutional contexts shape the experiences of women leaders.
The lecture sparked a vibrant discussion on global gender parity, leadership development, and the future of inclusive governance in academia. This event provided invaluable perspective for our academic community, aligning with our ongoing commitment to discussing issues of diversity, leadership, and international education.

Westminster International University in Tashkent- A seminar on the essential research tool, Mendeley, was successfully held on November 13, 2024. The event, presented by Abbos Utkirov, provided a comprehensive "Introduction to Mendeley Reference Management Tool."
The session offered a hands-on overview designed for academics and students. Attendees gained practical knowledge on how to:
- Build and organize a personal research library.
- Generate citations and bibliographies in various academic styles.
- Use the MS Word plugin to insert references while writing.
- Collaborate with peers by sharing references.
This workshop equipped participants with key digital skills to enhance their research efficiency and academic writing accuracy. The event highlighted our commitment to providing practical support for the research community.
The frontier of data analysis is rapidly evolving with the integration of Artificial Intelligence. On October 30, 2024, PhD candidate Otajon Otabekov guided the Westminster International University in Tashkent community through this new landscape in his seminar, “Using GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) for Data Analysis.”
Moving past the common perception of GPT as merely a chatbot, Mr. Otabekov presented its potent capabilities for cleaning data, coding, visualizing results, and even writing sections of academic papers. He provided practical examples and use-cases, demonstrating how this technology can significantly enhance research efficiency and depth.
A key part of the discussion was a balanced look at the challenges, including ensuring data privacy, mitigating model biases, and the necessity for researchers to maintain critical oversight. The engaging session concluded with a Q&A, where attendees explored the future implications of AI in their respective fields of study.
The event underscored WIUT's active role in facilitating discussions on cutting-edge tools that shape the future of research and industry practices.
On September 25, 2024, Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT) hosted a highly informative seminar presented by Alisher Makhkamov, a PhD student in Economics at the University of Reading, UK, and a scholarship holder of the “El Yurt Umidi” Foundation.
The event, titled “PhD Research in UK: Reality and Challenges,” offered a candid and thorough look into the journey of pursuing a doctorate in the United Kingdom. Mr. Makhkamov drew from his personal academic experiences to discuss both the intellectual rewards and the practical challenges of conducting high-level research in a competitive international environment.
Attendees, including prospective PhD candidates, faculty, and undergraduate students, gained valuable insights into topics such as the application process, adapting to a new academic culture, time management, and maintaining well-being during the demanding course of study. The presentation was followed by a vibrant Q&A session, allowing for a deeper discussion of specific concerns.
The seminar served as an excellent platform for knowledge-sharing and underscored the strong academic connections between institutions and the support provided by the “El Yurt Umidi” Foundation for developing Uzbekistan's research talent.
